There are several types of blogs. Classification of blogs is greatly influenced by three factors
- The purpose of the blog
- The type of content on the blog
- The method by which information or content is posted to the blog
Blogs can generally be classified into five (5) types.
- Personal Blogs
- Blogs by Genre
- Blogs by Media type
- Blogs by Device
- Corporate Blog
Personal Blogs
A personal blog is a blog owned or run and managed by a single individual. Personal blogs make up the majority of blogs on the web. These blogs, though named personal, can still be run by more than a single individual but in such cases, the other participants are considered guests or coauthors.
Blogs by Genre
Some blogs are classified and named by the subject on which they focus. If a blog’s focus is politics, it is called a political blog. One that focuses on education is called an educational blog. There also exists, entertainment blogs, fashion blogs, project blogs, house blogs, legal blogs, fashion blogs, etc.
Blogs by media type
Is a blog primarily test, photos, videos…etc? A blog mad up primarily of videos is called a vlog, one made up of links is called a linklog, Photos for photoblog. A sketchblog is a blog that holds a portfolio of sketches. Another type of blog is that which comprises mixed content types. Such are called tumblelogs.
Blogs by device
The way content is submitted to a blog qualifies in classifying that blog under a specific category. With advancements in Internet and web technology, blogging using a portable device like mobile phones or PDA. A blog that uses a mobile device is called a moblog.
Corporate Blogs
Some blogs are used internally to enhance the communication and culture in a corporation or externally for marketing, branding or public relations purposes. Such blogs are called corporate blogs.
