Here, I am not talking about the cool .com, .net, .org, .info…etc. I am talking about .co.cc
If your blog’s address is http://myblog.blogspot.com and you don’t want to pay for a domain name to use for that blog, you can register a domain name like www.myblog.co.cc free of charge and point it to your blog.
I am quite used to http://myblog.blogspot.com. It is some sort of a standard and identifies my blog with Blogger, but www.myblog.co.cc looks cute more professional.
Here is how it is done? Simple
1. Create a free account at www.co.cc
2. Register a domain name e.g www.myblog.co.cc
3. Setup the domain to work with your blogger account
4. Adjust some settings in your blogspot account so that blogspot accepts the name
Now, let’s go step by step
CREATE A FREE ACCOUNT AT WWW.CO.CC
Do we really need to talk about this? I don’t think so.
- Just visit www.co.cc and
- Click on create your account now (top right)
- Fill out a simple registration form and
- That’s it… your account in created
REGISTERING A FREE .CO.CC DOMAIN NAME
- click the Returning user, sign in here on top menu
- click on getting a new domain
- type the domain you want to register and click check availability
- if the domain is available and is actually free (some domains are reserved) then click continue to registration
- on the next page, you will be asked to set up your domain. For blogger, I recommend creating a CAME record with host ghs.blogger.com. Let’s do it!
CREATING A CNAME RECORD FOR YOUR .CO.CC DOMAIN
- ( Click on domain settings on the main menu)
- ( Click on the domain you want to configure)
- (click on setup)
- Select the second option called zone settings
- Fill in the following values
Host – enter the domain name you just registered here e.g. www.myblog.co.cc
Type – Select CNAME
Value – enter ghs.google.com
SETTING UP YOUR BLOGSPOT ACCOUNT TO USE YOUR CO.CC DOMAIN
Everything is almost ready. Just one more step. You need to tell blogspot all what you have been doing behind her back
- Sign in to your blogspot account and click on settings, on the blog you want to use your .co.cc domain with.
- Click on publishing
- Click custom domain
- Click switch to advanced settings
- Enter the .co.cc domain you registered (don’t leave out the www in front, else you will get in trouble)
- Scroll down and save
- After saving, another option displays asking you to redirect the domain without www to the one with www. Please choose that option and save again.
- Just sit back and relax for about 10 minutes and all with just be how you want it!
ARE YOU SACRED?
You shouldn’t be. You won’t lose any traffic. Not even a single visitor. You won’t have any broken links. Not even one.
All you have to do s tell your friends to update their bookmarks. This is even optional because they will automatically know since each time they visit your blog, they will see the new domain displayed on the address bar.
WHY NOT JUST GET A .COM OR ,NET DOMAIN FOR MY BLOG?
Good question. Those two may be the best domains ever, but if you haven’t got them yet, then you probably don’t want to spend on that. Instead of .blogspot.com, you may want something close to professional.
Don’t forget to post a comment here if anything goes wrong.

Wow! It’s the first time I’ve heard of this, Uncle Che. You’re a genius! I thought you’ve purchased another domain for our EC 4 Religion blog.
Well done!
I will have to request Ivy to edit the URL in my navigation bar

wow, That’s great info.
Is it just for blogger blogs? Will it work for wordpress?

@ LAINY
ha ha ha
No, no new domain. Just though .co.cc is better than .blogspot.com
It works just as a full registered domain name with DNS control. I will encourage anybody still using .blogspot.com to switch to it.

Good question. I will have to find out if wordpress supports CNAME. If it does, then maybe one can use something like ghs.wordpress.com for example as host name.

.co.cc’s are great alternatives if you don’t have the budget for .com’s. However, Name.com offers .com’s for six bucks so I don’t see why a lot of people still don’t wanna get one.

Hello Uncle Che, a very interesting and informative post!
I have heard of this “.co.cc” before, also a similar offer involving “.co.nr”. While I suppose there is nothing wrong with such domain names, for those who are interested, I think there are still some advantages with the more “standard” sub-domains for hosted blogs such as “.blogspot.com” or “.wordpress.com”.
The main issue being that anybody who sees such a well-known sub-domain (for example in a link) will instantly have an idea as to the type of website involved. Understandably, many people are reluctant to click on links, but I think that having a blog attached to a reputable domain may help somewhat, especially for people who are just starting…
