Oh no! Not these tags again. What is Uncle Che up to now? I thought on this post, he was done with the tag this, tag that stuff
Yeah, actually, I did cover a lot about tags on that small post, but after the definition, recommended usage and non recommended usage, and also how to include them on post titles and even urls where applicable, we forgot quantifying tags. How many tags should you use on a simple post?
First of all, I would prefer talking for before going against numerous tags.
Do you have a tag cloud on your sidebar? I must admit that tags and category clouds are the most difficult things to appreciate on a blog. Most often, a user is like “eh, so many words. So, finally, what is this about?” Another would say, “too few. Doesn’t this dude have anything to write on?”..etc.A reader will always think your tags are either too many or too small, depending on what their argument is based on.
Why use tags in the first place? Tags are sometimes looked upon as broader categories, and at times considered as subcategories. But considerations are OK, but I personally like making them subcategories for they instantly guide a reader from the category to the sentences on your post. Consider a post on your blog categorized under education. Education is quite a very broad topic, so it would be wise to give a reader some clues so that reading will be directional and as a result, he/she would find the post easy to understand.
If I am to read a post under the Education category of a blog, I would love some clues as to whether it is about grants and scholarships, colleges or universities, study materials..etc. When I know what I am about to read, my mind is directed towards that direction.
If you agree with me that tags are like leads on a highway that guide a reader, then you will agree equally that the number oif leads you will need depends on the length of the highway track (post size) and complexity of the highway track (category).
A post that is 2000 words long definitely should have more tags that another post that is 1000 words in length. Yeah! But also, if the post that is 1000 words long is on a strange, difficult or controversial topic, I think that one should have more tags. If your post is short, then definitely you need fewer keywords expressing the idea. If your post is about something easy and popular, then people certainly don’t need much guidance following through.
Overall, I stand on the side of using the least possible tags, so I would highly recommend a maximum of 10 tags per post. No matter how lengthy your posts are.
