Most of us (bloggers) have certainly passed that stage where we ask ourselves what we want to blog about. However, if we are considering starting another blog to add with the one(s) we already have, then I think just as the total newbies, we still have to ask ourselves that Question.
What do I want to blog about?
If you are asking yourself the above question, then that is the best possible question you can ever ask yourself if you want to start a new blog. The question of what to blog about will go a long way to answer many (if not all) of the following questions:
- What domain name will I choose?
- What type of content will I be posting?
- How frequently you will have to publish?
- What type of theme you will need?
- Will I need hosting?
- Will I allow comments on my blog?
- Will I moderate the comments?
- Who shall I be competing with?
- Where shall I search for traffic or backlinks?
- Will I need hosting?
Just choosing the niche of your blog brings up many questions that you must search for answers to (even before you make the first post).
However, before all those questions, there is one big question we have to ask ourselves.
The blogosphere holds it that there are two types of bloggers, Experts and reporters.
Digging right down to the roots of the concept of reports and experts in the field of blogging will be a while new lesson. For simplicity, in favor of this post’s nature, let’s keep the definitions as straight forward as possible.
An expert blogger has a mastery of subject matter, giving him/her the capability and skills of collecting data, making analysis and drawing up sensible conclusions that can act as (possible) solutions to both common and uncommon problems. A reporter lacks the skills of an expert but patiently lags behind and carefully studies what the expert does while at the same time, spreading the word about the recent developments by the expert and gives his own views and opinions about them.
Come on! Admit it. You don’t want to die reporting. At least, if you want to remain a reporter forever, then you are gradually improving on your reporting skills, I guess. Everyone wants to be an expert, sooner or later, but you will stand on the safe side f the fence if you ask yourself at the very beginning of your blog. Generally, everyone starts out as a reporter.
When you start a new blog, there are two possible things motivating you.
- Sound knowledge and mastery of a particular subject matter, or
- Too much passion giving you the desire to get involved.
Motivated by Knowledge
If knowledge is the foundation on which your motivation to blog about a specific subject stands, then it is possible to easily become an expert within the shortest possible time, depending on your serious you take what you do. When done repeatedly, you can easily fall in love with it and find yourself possessed by both knowledge in and passion for your niche.
Motivated by Passion
Now, let’s say you don’t really master the subject you want to blog about but you have intense love for it. With passion, one thing is almost guaranteed! You won’t give it up easily. However, you will have to work your way harder to climb up to the expert stage. When you finally get there, you must have gathered enough knowledge on your way, and coupled with your passion in the taken niche, you stand complete.
What I think about this
Most (if not all) of the mature bloggers will ask you to “blog about what you are good at” and very few will ask you to “blog about what you like. Only in rare situations will the two actually be the same. That is, being good at something doesn’t really mean you like it most, and also, liking something too much doesn’t necessarily mean you are good at it.
Most bloggers force the young ones to force themselves learning about something before they start blogging about it. That is not bad, actually but can easily make you a “prisoner”. If you love it very much but don’t know anything about it, give it a try. Start as a complete reporter and with that passion burning in you, you will easily learn as you move up. Remember they say “love conquers all”.

I think I am motivated by both knowledge and sheer passion for blogging, Uncle Che. When I started out blogging, I have limited knowledge about blogging resources and all. I blog about everything that practically comes to mind in random. But since I got addicted to this blogging thingy, I am always after for knowledge wherein I could get to share to visitors coming to my blog.
I feel ashamed sometimes for not having posted anything new or something that could be of interest to everyone. But what the heck! Some things I blog might be trivial to some but is of more importance to me because of my PASSION. Take for instance my passion for watching my favorite basketball team. I so love to blog about them especially when they are in their winning form. But some might not be able to relate to it. It wouldn’t stop me from blogging about them because it’s one of my passions though my blog does not belong in the sports niche.
