Your reasons for blogging or wanting to start a blog will, in one way or the other, depend on the type of blog you want to run. On a previous article, I examined different types of blogs. I will recommend you read that article before coming to this one because they are closely related.
Below are some of the basic reasons someone will want to start a blog.
Keeping Personal Records
In this post, we defined a blog as an “online diary”. Many people still blog today because they prefer having a diary online rather than the traditional paper type. During the day, one can note down all events that have taken place; things done, things to do, places gone to, educational, work and social issues, etc, and combine it all into one or two entries on a blog. This blog can then be shared with family members and close friends. A personal blog can sometimes be a reliable source of family history, where young people can go and read about what was written by their predecessors. Personal blogs can also be a source of one’s biography written by one’s self (autobiography).
Support Services
Many people run blogs because they want to give more strength to their business or website. Such blogs are called corporate blogs. On a corporate blogs, items especially updates and future plans about a business or website can be shared with customers and visitors. A blog can really add more “meaning” to a website or business and give people a wider idea of origin, scope and developments. A blog can be a very great source for promotion of a website or business.
Talent Showcase
Why do you think a photographer will like to run a photoblog? Why do you think a video editor will like to run a vlog (video blog)? Why do you think an artist will like to run a sketchlog? It is clear and simple. Showcase of talents!!! From your blog, people can have a brief idea of your skills.
Love of writing
Some people build and maintain blogs just because they love writing. Any form of writing, be it professional, literature, expression of observations or promotion of personal ideas and beliefs, etc. some people use their blog as a teaching tool to pass on knowledge to people in need. Someone, for example, can run a blog about his/her culture and tradition and this will help people who are very curious. Such blogs can “take you to places you have never been to”.
Income or extra income
Some people nowadays blogs simply for money. Blogs with high traffic can be a very good source of advertising and bloggers are being paid by various businesses and ad networks to display ads on their blogs. Some professional bloggers even make a full time income just from blogging, while others make very little or no money at all. A majority, however, can boast of making enough money to help pay part of their bills and maintain the blog.
There certainly should be a hundred reasons why people blog, but most of those can be classified under any relevant category described above. Whatever your reasons for blogging, just make sure you take your blogging seriously and I bet you will succeed with it.
Don’t blog just because you see others blogging. What is your own reason?

I guess 98% of all bloggers blog just for the money. You can easily spot those because of the ad clouds on their blog. Some claim they just want to cover domain and hosting costs. Well, putting the money first is quite a bad idea.
